Selborne Chambers 100th LEX site: LEX scores a century as IRIS MLC lose another set

Colin Everson

Leading commercial chancery set, Selborne Chambers, has become the latest in a long list of chambers to make the switch to Lex Chambers Management Software. Described by Legal 500 2011 as “exceptionally well-run”, Selborne chose to embrace the change in software that has seen Bar Squared’s client base increase from 0 to 100 in just over 5 years.

Selborne Chambers is a thriving Commercial and Chancery set of barristers chambers. It has particular emphasis on business matters and commercial disputes; professional negligence; company and financial services; corporate and personal insolvency; all aspects of property-related matters; trusts and estates; international and offshore disputes; civil fraud and asset recovery. They have repeatedly enjoyed plaudits for their service and performance and have been described by the Legal 500 as “extremely responsive” and in Chambers & Partners as “a little gem”.

In order to maintain their dominance in an ever increasingly competitive market place, Selborne Chambers required a comprehensive software package that provided them with simple yet effective diary management, the ability proactively to manage both Chambers and individual members’ finances, flexible and extensive reporting tools and a fully integrated marketing suite that made event and campaign management easy.

The system implemented afforded members and clerks alike the ability to keep an up to date view of their diary and fees billed and access information in relation to marketing they had never encountered before. Access to the Lex Chambers Management was made possible for them from almost anywhere in the world, whether that be through a handheld mobile device, iPad, laptop or remote desktop computer. The demands put on chambers by lay clients meant that this was a necessity.

Full Microsoft Exchange integration means that members of chambers will always have a true and accurate view of their diary. One of the many benefits to this was making the re-listing of cases at Court a simple and straightforward process, relieving some of the burden of numerous telephone calls to the clerks.

The advanced yet easy-to-use Chambers management application has enabled this innovative and progressive set to further improve the business model on which it operates.

Hugh Jackson and Darren Madle (Barrister and Clerk at Selborne Chambers, respectively) give their views on the demands that had to be met and the solutions provided by Bar Squared.

Hugh Jackson, barrister with responsibility for overseeing the change to Lex, said:

"The demands of our practices had begun to place strain on our existing legacy chambers management software (IRIS MLC).
LEX understood what we wanted for busy practitioners as well as our clerks’ room. They delivered what they promised and they continue enthusiastically to work with us on future extensions to the product."

Darren Madle, clerk responsible for the transition to Lex said:

"Bar Squared worked closely with us to replace our existing installation. The product is far more efficient and flexible than our old system and it delivers business and management tools fully to support practices as well as to boost the service we give solicitors. Without exception, it has immediately gained the support of all user members of chambers"
