Bar Standards Board changes to Chambers Complaints Guidance

Helen Ford

The Bar Standards Board has issued changes to its Guidance for Dealing with Complaints Made to Multi-Member Sets of Chambers or to Sole Practitioners. The changes that came into effect on 6 October 2010, require Chambers to write to their lay clients advising them of the complaints procedure available to them. Unfortunately, we were not made aware of this change in advance.

In order to do this through your chambers management software you will be required to enter the name and address of the lay client against each case record. As this is a new requirement, development is now under way to allow the creation of the lay client address in the Secondary Contact details tab of each case record. We anticipate having a new version of LEX available within the next 14 days that will enable the generation of this letter on entry of the lay client address.

In the meantime, if you would like a letter made available through the ‘Start Letter’ function that you can type the lay client address into manually, please forward your requirements to the Helpdesk support@barsquared.com who will be pleased to assist.

We will advise you as soon as the new release is available.
